National History

Our foundation, which was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international organization that is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women.  To trace its roots is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th century.

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes ten Regional Directors who supervise within an identified geographical area, including colleges and universities.

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college and graduate women, and to be of service to all mankind.  We also believe that the people we serve should be treated with dignity, respect, and kindness.
